When an individual has made the decision to lose weight and ready to make the necessary lifestyle changes to achieve this, effective guidance is required to prevent any further weight gain). This includes goals to reduce excess weight at the right pace and maintain an ideal body weight long term). What do we mean by right pace I hear you ask? The evidence-based recommended targets to aim for state an initial weight loss of 10 percent of body weight to be achieved over 6 months. The rate of weight loss should be 1 to 2 pounds each week, a nice steady pace wouldn't you agree?! It had been observed that rapid rates of weight loss in a short space of time do not achieve better long-term results. Why? Because there is a greater risk of relapse and potentially greater weight gain later on. After the first 6 months of weight loss therapy, the priority should be weight maintenance achieved through combined changes in diet, physical activity, and behavior. Further weight loss can be considered after a period of effective weight maintenance.
Should I consider weight loss therapy?
Weight loss therapy is recommended for persons with a BMI ≥ 30 and for individuals with a BMI between 25 and 29.9 OR a high-risk waist circumference [which is > 35in (88 cm) in women or > 40in (102 cm) in men], and two or more risk factors (such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes type 2, smoking etc). Remember to seek medical advice before starting any weight loss therapy.
